Chapter 6 – Inner Working
Our infamous backer was astonished to read about the misfortunates that had unfolded the night before. Mr. Aquitaine had understood the contract was in full swing. He had also known things could get messy and it was a part of the business. Like in all great wars, there are sacrifices that need to be made for the greater good of the cause.
As he sat back in his chair, the portly man reminisced on some words an old and dear friend once said, “War is not fair. In the history of mankind, no battle has been fair. We did not get into this business to play a game, where rules are in place to keep the integrity between the parties involved.”
He pondered the thought. There are always sacrifices that have to be made for the greater good of the overall goal. The portly Mr. Aquitaine leaned forward from his chair as he picks up his espresso. His eyes glazed over for a bit before he drank it. In the rush of all, he had business to take care of and would not be bothered by the incidences.
Our hooded mercenary went on the day, plotting their next steps to secure their mission but more importantly their freedom. This was the contract that would allow them to have a new start, a new city, a new beginning. It would be everything that they wanted. It was clear that another mishap could not happen in the completion of the contract.
It was self-evident that our mercenary was equipped with a lot of skills and knowledge, but most of all… Integrity. They were no stranger to enemies and knew how to arm accordingly. With figuring out the next move, they recollected on something their combat teacher once said: “The greatest thing you can do to prepare for the unexpected, is to expect everything.”
It all made sense and the mental fog that had overtook that morning would not succeed and take the afternoon as well. They scoured through papers upon their desk for the timeline. Peering through the names and their prospective location for the next week, they made a map of where and when our hit-list victims might cross paths in the next couple of days.
Yes, it was clear Mrs Avery would not appear on the timeline in suit with the other, but that was not of importance. There were bigger targets that would be gathering for a charity event over the weekend. It was the perfect opportunity to schmooze with the individuals before their own demise. It was what makes a great assassin. They do not only read the profiles on their prey, but also have the pleasure of getting to know them before the final act commenced.
It was their specialty. They had more control over the targets than other hired help. Easily moldable and could do any task that was asked from the highest bidder. It was an honor to see them in their element of disguise. They were always one to put on a performance, even if there was no credit to be awarded. It was something they shared in common with Mrs. Avery.
